In an exchange in which any one of a number of incoming lines may be connected to any one of a number of outgoing lines via any one of a number of stores, the transmission speed on the outgoing line is determined by a clock associated with the line. Received characters pass to a core store and, when their transmission direction and priority have been established, are passed to an intermediate magnetic store. Each intermediate store may include several messages for the same destination. An auxiliary circuit takes account of the message priority and of the time for which a message has been held in the intermediate store, and sets up a connection to the outgoing line. A clock generator forming part of the outgoing line transmission unit controls the speed of onward transmission. |
