<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that a satisfactory color image cannot be obtained at night due to the shortage of imaging device sensitivity because the color image is generated on the basis of visible light pixel signals only. <P>SOLUTION: In an imaging apparatus which has an imaging device 2 in which a plurality of pixels have sensitivity in the wavelength regions of visible light and near infrared light to generate a luminance signal and a color signal from the obtained visible light pixel signal and the near infrared light pixel signal, the relationship of magnitude between the visible light pixel signal and the near infrared light pixel signal is decided by adding a visible light/near infrared light dominance decision unit 4c. The generation method of the luminance signal is switched by controlling a YC processing unit 4a according to the decision result. In the daytime, both the luminance signal and the color signal are generated using the visible light pixel signal, while at night or the like having a small amount of visible light, the luminance signal is generated using the near infrared light pixel signal. When in more darkness, the color signal is generated using pixel mixture or the visible light pixel signal obtained by a long-time exposure.
