<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for wiping molten metal, which has greatly improved durability for a capability of wiping the molten metal, and to provide a wiper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This wiping device having a holding zone which passes a steel strip that has come out from a molten-metal bath therein while keeping the strip at an atmospheric temperature that is approximately equal to that in the molten-metal bath includes: a box which is attached at an outlet of the steel strip in the holding zone and is gas-sealed; a wiper-supporting part in which the wiper is attached to a pair of rotating shafts that sandwich the steel strip between the top and bottom shafts, in the inside of the box; a wiper-elevating part which makes the wiper in the wiper-supporting part brought in contact with and detach from the steel strip; and a wiper-rotating part which makes the rotating shafts rotate through flexible joints. The wiper has a body with a rectangle cross section, or a body with an oval or elliptic cross section, and a heat-resistant wiping member which is wound around the surface of the body.
