A process for heterogeneous acid-catalysed reactions of 3-12C olefins having a sec. or tert. C atom with either: (i) themselves (i.e. oligomerisation); (ii) branched 4-8C alkanes (i.e. alkylation); or (iii) 1-4C alcohols (i.e. etherification); the reactions giving equilibrium prods. in which reaction is incomplete is claimed. The process comprises using a boiler by: (a) feeding the starting material (1) through a catalyst unit (2); (b) sepg. the reaction mixt. by distn. (3) into reaction prod. as sump phase (4) and an incompletely-reacted fraction as a vapour phase; (c) withdrawing part of the sump phase as final prod. (5) while running the remainder over a sump heater (7); (d) fully condensing the vapour phase from step (b) in a condenser (9); and (e) recycling the fully condensed incompletely-reacted starting materials together with fresh materials to step (a). Also claimed is an appts. used for the above process.
