A nickel-cadmium or other secondary cell with alkaline electrolyte is provided with a positive electrode consisting of nickelous hydroxide mixed with potassium hydroxide solution, and a negative electrode comprising a porous nickel plate containing cadmium oxide or hydroxide. In this condition the cell is in the discharged state, and it is sealed before being subjected to the electrolytic forming process. In the case of cadmium oxide, enough additional KOH is added to ensure conversion to the hydroxide. In a specific example the positive electrode was moulded from a mix consisting of 70 parts by weight of powdered Ni(OH)2 and 30 parts fine graphite powder wetted with 13.8 parts of 35% aqueous KOH. The moulding produced pellets of which two could be placed together to form a split cylinder around which a cylindrical negative electrode, rolled from sheet, was placed with intervening insulation, the whole being inserted in a nickelplated, drawn sheet steel container and then sealed. |
