One or more alpha-olefines containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms are polymerized in a hydrocarbon medium with a catalyst comprising a compound of a transition metal of atomic number from 22 to 92, and selected from Group IV, V, or VI of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table, and an organo-metallic compound or hydride of a metal of Group I(a), II(a), or III(a) of the Periodic Table, and the molecular weight of the product is controlled by carbon dioxide alone, or in conjunction with another known regulator, e.g. an organic halogen compound, and hydrogen. The carbon dioxide is preferably introduced with the monomers, e.g. mixed with ethylene. The preferred catalyst is diethyl aluminium chloride, and TiCl3 made by reducing TiCl4 with an organometallic compound. In the examples, the polymerization of ethylene, propylene, and a mixture of ethylene and propylene, are exemplified. The polymers are recovered by conventional techniques, e.g. addition of butanol. |
