<p>A composite yarn comprises a plurality of filaments, and fibres heat bonded to and interlocked with the filaments. One or two curtains of filaments of a thermoplastic resin or resins - e.g. polyamide and polyolefins - are extruded and pass into the nip of a pair of rolls which rotate at a speed faster than the extrusion speed so as to at least partly draw the filaments. A fibrous web - e.g. of wood pulp, ceramic or asbestos fibres - is fed into the pair of rollers on each side of the curtains or filaments to adhere to the filaments whilst they are still tacky. In addition a further sheet of filaments - e.g. of glass, metal, of a polyester - or a fibrous web of any staple fibre or fibre blend, of pulp, may be fed in between the two extruded filamentary curtains to the pair of nip rollers. The composite laminated web produced at the pair of rollers is passed over cooling rollers and then longitudinally slit to produce a plurality of tapes each comprising a plurality of filaments with fibres bonded thereto. Each tape may optionally be further drawn by being passed between two pairs of draw rollers, in between which there are three grooved rollers which are radiantly heated and which consolidate the tape. The tape is either further consolidated by being passed through an orifice which is air cooled before being wound on a spool, or twisted by means of a ring spindle.</p> |
