PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens that is suitable for a video camera, electronic still camera, or the like, which uses a solid imaging element, etc., and that includes, in particular, an optical element for bending an optical path, and that ensures an extremely compact design, high image quality, and highly variable magnification; and to provide an optical apparatus mounted with the same. SOLUTION: The zoom lens having the optical element for bending the optical path includes, in order from the object side along an optical axis, a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power, a fourth lens group G4 having positive refractive power, and a fifth lens group G5 having negative refractive power. The third lens group G3 is composed of a plurality of lenses. If the optical length of the optical element P for bending the optical path is denoted as PL, the focal length of the zoom lens at a wide-angle end is denoted as fW and the focal length of the zoom lens at a tele-photo end is denoted as fT, the zoom lens satisfies the expressions given below: 1.00<PL/fW<1.75 and 0.30<PL/fT<0.45.
