The unit (10) has a belt strap (12) and a retractor module (14) formed such that a belt locking function (16), belt tightening function (18) and a belt retractor function (20) are realized, where the functions are executed by an electric motor (22). The retractor function is executed by the motor and/or a spring unit (24). The locking function is realized by evaluating information from a belt strap movement sensor (26), acceleration sensors (28, 30) and a rotation rate sensor (32). The sensors detect a belt e.g. lap belt, movement and/or acceleration of a vehicle (38) i.e. aircraft. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a belt system for an occupant protection system in a vehicle.
