A spindle head for a machine tool where a spindle (10) to which a tool is attached is rotated about the axis of support shafts (58, 59). Two rotation members (9, 58) forming a rotation transmission mechanism that rotates the spindle (10) and transmitting driving force of a rotation drive device (56) are fastened together at their connection sections by a bolt group (301) and are connected together with their relative rotation prevented by friction force exerted by the fastening of the bolt group. Rotation prevention torque based on the friction force is set to a value that is greater than torque applied to the connection sections during processing and is smaller than torque applied to the connection sections when external force that produces deformation of the spindle (10) exceeding a permissible range is applied to the spindle. By this, the spindle (10) does not deform beyond the permissible range even if the tool or the spindle (10) collides with a processing jig etc.
