<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether a category given to an defective image belongs to a proper category without performing complex calculation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: One category is previously given to an objective defect image 72 by a worker and ranges E<SB>x1</SB>-E<SB>x3</SB>and E<SB>y</SB>1-E<SB>y3</SB>of feature quantity are set from mean values and standard deviations of feature quantities of types x, y of defective images which belong to three categories. The feature quantity U<SB>x2</SB>of one type x of the objective defect image 72 is contained only in the range E<SB>x2</SB>of feature quantity. Thus, one vote is given to a category that centers on an average location 7021. Similar voting is also performed to the other type y of feature quantity. Thus, one vote is given to a category that centers on an average location 7021. Then, when a category having the greatest votes is different from a category given to the objective defect image, a result thereof is notified to the worker.
