<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TDI type image sensor having a function of switching the number of TDI stages to the optional number of stages without increasing the number of input clock pins, and also to provide a driving method therefor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The TDI type image sensor has a vertical scanning circuit including a shift register circuit and a line selection circuit and switches a vertical transfer direction in an optional position of an imaging area, according to an input clock to the shift register circuit to capture an image, and only signals vertically transferred to a horizontal transfer part are time-delay-integrated and read.
