<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which accelerates and stabilizes reading processing and can be made compact as a whole by dividing the reading area of an entire document into two reading areas or more and controlling reading speeds in the respective reading areas in a variable manner. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the image reading apparatus 10 with a reading means for reading the image of the document 11 placed on a platen 12 while performing main scanning and sub-scanning, the reading area is divided into three reading areas A, B and C being the front end, the central part and the rear end of the document along the sub-scanning direction, and a reading speed in the reading areas A and C on the front end side and the rear end side is controlled so as to be slower than that in the reading area B of the central part.
