<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head and head slider which improve read sensitivity by increasing core width. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic head 27 includes a read element 41 and a write element 47. The read element 41 has a magnetoresistive effect film 44 specifying the core width in the down track direction of the recording track. The write element 47 is positioned adjacent to the read element 41 in the down track direction. In the magnetic head 27, the core width is specified in the down track direction of the recording track, so that the larger core width is secured for the magnetoresistive effect film 44. The larger cross sectional area is secured for the magnetoresistive effect film 44 according to the increase of the core width. As a result, when securing the same surface recoding density as before on a memory medium, the magnetoresistance change ratio (MR ratio) of the magnetoresistive effect film 44 is increased than before.
