A method of treating refuse comprises feeding the refuse to one end 50 of a horizontal, rotatable drum 10, adding water at (48), see Fig. 6 (not shown), to bring the refuse to a predetermined moisture content, and simultaneously pulverizing and advancing the refuse along the drum by rotating the drum. The drum has vanes 22, 23 which tend to feed refuse back towards the inlet 50 and an intermediate perforate portion 16 for separating pulverized material from unpulverized. The portion 16 is of reduced diameter, see Fig. 1 (not shown), and is surrounded by a shell 18 defining a space 19 to which pulverized material passes for delivery by helical blades 26 to an outlet (20). Unpulverized material traverses the drum 10 to the end portion 17 where magnetic material is lifted by magnets 42 to a shoot (43), see Fig. 5 (not shown), the outlet (20) and the open end of portion 17 leading to separate conveyers, see Fig. 3 (not shown).</p> |
