Vinyl compounds are prepared by reacting ethylene, oxygen and a naccleophilic compound having at least one readily removable hydrogen atom, in the presence of palladous oxide (preferably on a carrier), as a catalyst. Nucleophilic compounds may be hydrogen halides, hydrogen cyanide, carboxylic acids, alcohols, phenols</>a, mercaptans, thiophenols, primary and secondary amines and carboxylic acid amides or imides and many are listed. Compounds containing two or more, the same or different, such groups may also be used. The carrier for the catalyst may be aluminium oxide, or silicate, silica gel, zeolites, feldspars, pumice clays or molecular silver. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate, vinylisobutyrate and vinyl chloride. |
