<PICT:1036822/C1/1> Moist chlorine gas is cooled, washed and dried by contacting the gas with sulphuric acid using conditions of temperature and pressure defined by the area bounded by the isothermal line at 9.8 DEG C., the line of equilibrium A between liquid aqueous sulphuric acid and the solid hydrates of sulphuric acid in the range 100% sulphuric acid to 42% sulphuric acid, and the curve B through the points 0% acid, 9.8 DEG C.; 34% acid, - 20 DEG C.; and 42% acid on the line of equilibrium. The sulphuric acid may be cooled by the evaporation of liquid chlorine introduced into the gas or liquid phase.
