<p>A plate workpiece (4) supported on a workpiece table (3) is formed with a region having a groove-like portion (22) extending upwardly from a support plane (5) of the table. A tool die (11) is raised along a stroke axis until it reaches a processing position at which a support face (23) of the die reaches the underside of the groove-like portion. The punching process is carried out on the region of the groove-like portion resting on the support face by lowering a tool punch (9) onto the die such that the punch is engaged into an aperture (24) of the die.
