A device (100) for driving a door of an elevator includes a door header (130), a *dloor (121, 122); and a driving motor(140). The door header, which is mounted on a frame (112) defining a doorway (114), includes a vertical portion substantially parallel to a plane of the doorway. The door is movably supported on the frame. The driving motor, which is disposed on the vertical portion of the door header (130a), includes a housing (147) fixed with-respect to. the vertical portion (130a), a rotating shaft (144) having an axis that is oriented substantially perpendicularly-to the vertical portion, a driving pulley, and a driving portion. The rotating shaft is rotatably supported by the vertical portion at one end thereof and is rotatably supported by the housing (147, 148) at the other end thereof. The driving pulley (145) is coupled tp the rotating shaft (144). The driving portion drives the rotating shaft.
