[Also in Division F2] A valve comprises a valve body 11 having inlet and outlet ports 14, 15, a rotatable valve element 12 having a fluid passageway therethrough and rotatable by external means 18, and a seal 22 fixed to the element and the inlet port and rupturable by rotation of the valve element, whereby the element is kept out of contact with fluid upstream of the valve until it is rotated. The seal 22 is welded, brazed or soldered to the inlet pipe and the valve element and when made from shear resistance material, such as stainless steel, aluminium or copper, has an undercut 24. A crank or rotating rod 18 engages a slot 17 in the valve element 12 which is mounted in bearings 13 and co-operates with a spring-loaded annular seal 20. The valve may be used in a fire fighting sprinkler system, an aircraft escape system or in a rocket motor fuelling system. In the latter case two valves controlling fuel and oxidizer are coupled to a common actuator.</p> |
