The process for laser cutting a piece of carbon steel (5) using a laser beam and an assist gas, is claimed. The laser beam has a power of 2-100 kW, and is generated by carbon dioxide laser device, yttrium aluminum garnet laser device or using yttrium fibers. The piece has a thickness of 0.1-100 mm, and is optionally coated with a surface layer of aluminum and/or zinc or paint. The pressure of the gas is 8-50 bars. The diameter of the outlet of a nozzle through which the laser beam is focused and gas distribution takes place, is 1.2-6 mm.
