The method involves defining two categories of conditions such as safe and comfort conditions (1, 2), of a vehicle and defining two utilization modes of an automatic start and stop function of a combustion engine, such as standard and economic modes. Stop authorization of the combustion engine is only granted if the safe and comfort conditions are satisfied, when the standard mode is selected. Stop authorization of the combustion engine is granted even if the safe condition is only satisfied, when the economic mode is selected.
