PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high purity optically active mandelic acids useful as raw materials of pharmaceuticals and agrichemicals, liquid crystal materials, and optical resolution agents. SOLUTION: The crystals of the target optically active mandelic acids can be obtained with high chemical purity in a high yield while inhibiting the incorporation of a dimer derived from the optically active mandelic acids into the crystals and allowing crystal particles to grow. Further, the target optically active mandelic acids can be obtained with high optical purity and in the form of crystals which are easy to handle. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
