PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for a spark ignition engine achieving fail-safe of a preignition suppression control system. SOLUTION: Failure of the preignition suppression control system is detected (S1101). When the failure is not detected, a step for normal time is performed (S1103) for controlling an engine by a first controlled variable for suppressing preignition. Meanwhile, when the failure is detected, steps for abnormal time are performed (S1104-S1108) for controlling the engine by a second controlled variable for suppressing the preignition.
