PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a collision mitigation device for reducing impact force (acceleration force) applying to passengers and crew by lowering peak load during a collision by starting and promoting pressing and breaking of an energy absorbing member while an energy absorbing member just after the collision receives compression load and elastically deforms. SOLUTION: A rail vehicle includes the collision mitigation device having an energy absorbing body 100 for absorbing collision energy by crushing during the collision at an end part of an underframe 6. While the energy absorbing body 100 just after the collision receives compression load and elastically deforms, projections 103 provided at a distal end part 102 of the energy absorbing body 100, as a trigger mechanism for starting and promoting the crushing of the energy absorbing body 100, and a cylindrical body 110 as a trigger member are provided. The energy absorbing body 100 starts the crushing during the elastic deformation by starting an action of the trigger mechanism, the elastic deformation is further advanced, the peak load during the collision can be avoided from being increased.
