The engine (1) has a fresh gas line sucking-in combustion air from environment and an exhaust gas line (7), where an exhaust gas aftertreatment system (4) is switched-on into the exhaust gas line. An exhaust gas recirculation line (10) connects the fresh gas line, and is controlled by an exhaust gas recirculation valve (11). An exhaust gas tapping point from the exhaust gas line is arranged in a zone with stable pressure ratios. The exhaust gas tapping point is arranged behind the exhaust gas aftertreatment system in the exhaust gas line.
