Flow of fluid, which may be continuous or intermittent, from a nozzle 26 is normally directed to an outlet 19 due to boundary layer action along a wall 23 but is switched to an outlet 20 by a transverse flow of control fluid from either or both of passages 16,17. A cusp 30 at the junction of a curved wall 22 with a wall of the outlet 20 scoops off a portion of the fluid which flows in a circular path 31 to provide a feedback for returning the main flow to the outlet 19 when the control flow ceases. The arrangement may be such that control flows in both passages 16,17 are necessary to switch the main flow. The number of control passages may be varied, and more than one main nozzle 26 may be provided. Also, the wall 23 may be set back, as shown dotted, so that boundary layer action is not employed, in which case the nozzle 26 is positioned to direct flow into the outlet 19. In a modification, the two passages 16, 17 merge into a single nozzle in the wall 23, and a vent may be provided just upstream of this nozzle whereby the flow through the nozzle is insufficient to deflect the main flow unless there is a control flow in each passage.</p> |
