<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for operating an exhaust gas sensor for improving reliability in sensor signals of the exhaust gas sensor provided so that the exhaust gas sensor is disposed in exhaust of an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: In the method of operating the exhaust gas sensor 12, the exhaust gas sensor 12 has at least two electrodes 13, 14, 19. A pump current IP flows between the electrodes and a pump voltage UP is generated between the electrodes, and the exhaust gas sensor 12 is operated at rated operating temperature te_N. In the exhaust gas sensor 12, low-temperature operation is performed, where the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor 12 is lower than the rated operating temperature te_N.
