FLAME-RETARDANT EXPANDABLE POLYSTYRENE RESIN PARTICLE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame-retardant expandable polystyrene resin particle that has improved handleability in the production process even when tetrabromocyclooctane (TBCO) in a powder form is used as a flame retardant by preventing the absorption of TBCO into a resin particle from being non-uniform and inhibiting TBCO as a flame retardant from being formed into a solidified ball.

SOLUTION: The flame-retardant expandable polystyrene resin particle is produced by impregnating a polystyrene resin particle with tetrabromocyclooctane being a flame retardant in a powder form allowed to be dispersed by virtue of a silica fine powder before or during the impregnation of the polystyrene resin particle dispersed in an aqueous suspension with a blowing agent and taking the polystyrene resin particle out of the aqueous suspension. The tetrabromocyclooctane is added in an amount of 0.45-2.0 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. polystyrene resin and the silica fine powder is incorporated in an amount of 0.3-1.5 pts.wt. based on 98.5-99.7 pts.wt. tetrabromocyclooctane being a flame retardant in a powder form.
