<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein variable control of a peak brightness level may cause variations in the moving picture characteristics and flicker characteristics and the visibility to deteriorate. <P>SOLUTION: A power line drive circuit for driving a power line connected to each pixel arranged in a matrix on a self-luminous display panel is equipped with the functions that include: during an emission period of a self-luminous element, a first driving power for giving a maximum driving amplitude and a second driving power for giving an intermediate driving amplitude which is shaped into a pulse waveform are supplied to the power line, to produce a predetermined peak luminance level in the emission period, with both the end positions fixed.
