PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite membrane having a separation layer of polyvinyl alcohol, keeping high selectivity and being stable even when dewatering a mixture containing aldehyde. SOLUTION: The composite membrane for water separation with at least one separation layer (4) of cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol is provided and the separation layer (4) is subjected to a post-crosslinking operation using an acid or an acid-releasing compound and at least one dialdehyde in a separate process step.
