PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress fluctuation of an SNR detected for every perpendicular magnetic recording medium to enhance reliability of evaluation by: calculating the optimum value in a test signal having a prescribed frequency; and evaluating the perpendicular magnetic recording medium based on the optimum value. SOLUTION: In a method for evaluating the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 100 formed in a disk shape, a plurality of test signals having prescribed frequencies are recorded in a prescribed range in a circumferential direction of the perpendicular magnetic recording medium (S100), playback output of recorded signals is continuously measured for every prescribed frequency (S102), a profile is formed, a peak in the profile is derived, the frequency of the test signal in the peak is extracted, a signal noise ratio of the test signal of the extracted frequency is measured and the medium is evaluated based on the measured signal noise ratio.
