PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modifier imparting a paper product with pliancy and surface smoothness simultaneosuly, and to provide such a paper product containing the same. SOLUTION: The modifier includes, as active ingredients, one or more compounds selected from each specific a sorbitan fatty acid ester, pentaerythritol fatty acid exter, dipentaerythritol fatty acid exter, olyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid ester, sodium dialkylsulfosucciniate, sodium alkyloleylsulfosuccinate, and sodium dioleylsulfosuccinate.
