<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus wherein a user can precisely focus his eye even when pupil is expanded by an optical branching element such as a diffraction element. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A light branching element includes: a first branching part which branches image light into a plurality of portions to expand the exit pupil in X-axis direction; and a second branching part which branches image light into a plurality of portions to expand the exit pupil in Y-direction intersecting with the X-axis direction, wherein the light branching element is set so that both X-axis direction and Y-axis direction have an angle larger than zero degree and smaller than 45 degrees with respect to the line direction and the column direction of a pixel matrix.
