In an absorption system having a gas-fired generator 10, separator 20, condenser 11, evaporator 12 and absorber 13, the refrigerant in an evaporator sump 34 is maintained at or below a given level. As illustrated the level is determined by an opening 76 in a partition separating the evaporator from the absorber. Refrigerant overflowing through the opening 76 passes through a line 80 into a pipe 55 which carries solution from a pan 48 surrounding the absorber tube bundle 46. The pipe 55 in turn opens into an outlet 56 from an absorber sump 50. A wall 77 overlies the overflow opening 76. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the partition is imperforate and a line (90) leads directly from the evaporator sump 34 to the pipe 55. The line (90) includes an inverted U-bend (92) the height of which determines the liquid level in the sump 34. The pressure conditions of the system are such that if siphon action occurs in the bend (92) the refrigerant evaporates to prevent further draining. However if the refrigerant is contaminated with absorbent its boiling point is lowered so that siphon action can occur to drain the contaminated refrigerant.</p> |
