The method involves operating a bivalent engine system (1) with fuel of two fuel types e.g. natural gas and gasoline, where the operation of the system with fuel of one of the fuel types causes a higher exhaust gas temperature than the operation of the system with fuel of the other fuel type at an operating point. The system is operated in a mode of operation in which fuel of one of the fuel types is supplied based on whether an acceleration process is requested. Quantities of the fuel are adjusted such that an upper temperature threshold value of an exhaust gas is not exceeded. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operation of a bivalent engine system (2) computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operation of a bivalent engine system.
