<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a liquid crystal display device, which has an optical anisotropic layer and allows the reduction in number of manufacturing steps. <P>SOLUTION: The substrate for a liquid crystal display device includes a color filter layer having a retardation of 5 to 150 nm as an in-plane retardation resulting from inclining a sample at 40° with a slow axis as the axis of rotation.
