CERIUM OXIDE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cerium oxide comprising fine and cubic polygonal particles.

SOLUTION: The cerium oxide comprises cubic polygonal particles having a length of one side of 5-200 nm, wherein images of the polygonal particles observed with a transmission electron microscope are cubic. A method for producing this abrasive material includes a step of forming cerium (III) hydroxide by reacting cerium chloride with an alkaline material in an inert gas atmosphere, and a step of converting the cerium (III) hydroxide to cerium oxide by oxidizing the cerium (III) hydroxide.
