<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus for vehicle which can certainly recognize an object without increasing an operation load irrespective of distance and direction to the object. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes: an external camera 2 which picks up frame images A1 and A2 at the times t1 and t2; a camera motion estimation part 34 which computes momentum and distance to an indicator 20; a template creation part 35 which creates a basic template from an image A1; an image transformation parameter calculation part 36 which calculates a transformation matrix for performing image transformation from the image A1 to the image A2; a template transformation part 38 which creates a transformation template by transforming the basic template with a transformation matrix; and a template matching processing part 32 which performs template matching processing of the image A2 by the transformation template, and detects the indicator 20. The transformation matrix is selected from among a similarity transformation matrix, an affine transformation matrix, and a projection transformation matrix according to the size and distance of the momentum.
