PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for identifying and eliminating the source of background noise in multi-party teleconferences. SOLUTION: There is provided a mechanism that allows participants over a conference call to identify, and then to enable muting or filtering, the participant(s) responsible for introducing the noise, regardless of whether the noise is caused by transmission impairments or by the participant(s) being located in a noisy location. For example, individual users can depress a "test" button that permits each of the participants to be locked one at a time. As a result, the source of the noise is identified.
