The method involves detecting wiping frequency of a windscreen wiper system (6) of a vehicle, and automatically starting or stopping a drive motor based on the detected wiping frequency by an automatic start-/stop device (1). The drive motor is not automatically stopped when the wiping frequency lies above a preset threshold. An operating condition of an air-conditioning system of the vehicle is detected. The motor is automatically started or stopped additionally based on the detected operating condition. An independent claim is also included for an automatic start-/stop device comprising a detection unit.
