The device (9) has a patient intake air duct (6) attached to inspiration and expiration gas lines (5, 8). An extraction unit extracts residual pressure in the patient intake air duct and the expiration gas line during an expiration phase. The residual pressure is controlled and/or regulated by controlling and/or regulating a flow rate of a gas guiding device (2) during the expiration phase. An increase of the flow rate of the gas guiding device is linked with an increase of the residual pressure and is reversed due to pneumatic resistance of a breathable air guiding system (36). An independent claim is also included for a method for artificial respiration of a patient.
