The method involves conducting exhaust gas via separately controllable flow paths to an exhaust gas turbine of an exhaust gas turbocharger and to an exhaust gas recirculation system. The flow paths to the exhaust gas turbine and to the exhaust gas recirculation system are controlled by respective valves. The valves are actuated in a phase-shifted manner, where one of the valves opens during a high-pressure phase of the exhaust stroke and the other valve opens during a low-pressure phase of the exhaust stroke. A closing point of the valves is varied based on an engine operating parameter.
