<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data compression apparatus for reducing the time for compressing image data, and an image reading apparatus equipped with the same. <P>SOLUTION: The data compression apparatus includes: a setting reception means 19 for dividing image data representing an image in a sub-scanning direction by a predetermined lines, storing encoded data for each band obtained by compressing the data for each band representing one unit in a plurality of storage means for encoded data, and receiving first address setting; a control means 10 for successively storing, when the encoded data for each band is generated in encoding means 15, the data in the storage means 16A, B for encoded data; and free space address acquisition means 20A, B for setting the first address of a free space for each 16A, B as a free space address. The control means 10 further sets as free space addresses 16B, A different from storage means 16A, B for encoded data storing data while the encoded data are generated, to complete the generation of encoded data for one band.
