<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which inhibits foaming causing a problem in separation and refinement of sugar chain compounds produced in a culture solution and clogging during solid phase extraction. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method, a protease selected from among papain, bromelain, trypsin, subtilisin, and the like is made to act on a culture solution containing sugar chain compounds of an animal cell (an aqueous medium in which sugar chain compounds have been produced by a sugar chain primer method) to decompose protein in the culture solution to inhibit foaming, and then the sugar chain compounds are separated and refined from the aqueous medium.
