<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which excels in both of shielding characteristics and operation stability and hardly drops response speed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The display element includes: a transparent electrode; an opposite electrode; and an electrolyte therebetween. The electrolyte includes: silver or a compound containing silver in its chemical structure; and white scattering particles. The display element activates the electrodes so as to dissolve and precipitate silver.
