The method involves detecting an operation of control elements such as a control element i.e. rotary actuator (7) of a heating and an air conditioning system and a control element i.e. touch screen (8) of a navigation system, by a user (1) of a vehicle. The determination is made, whether the user is a driver of the vehicle, where the user operates the control elements. A support of the driver is adjusted by an assistance device depending on the determination that whether the user is the driver of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for an assistance device for a vehicle.
