PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means inhibiting a sudden rise of engine torque or engine speed according to the gradient of a road surface in restarting the engine from an idling stop state. SOLUTION: An automobile W is equipped with an engine 1, a torque converter 20 including a lock-up clutch 26, and an automatic transmission 10. The engine 1 is stopped with a control unit if an engine stop condition is satisfied, and the engine 1 is restarted if an engine restart condition is satisfied, when the automatic transmission 10 is in a D-range while the automobile W stops. The sudden rise of engine speed in engine restart is inhibited through the slip engagement of a lock-up clutch 26 and rolling vibration of the engine 1 is inhibited when the engine restart condition is satisfied. The rise rate of the engine torque or engine speed in engine restart is desirably controlled according to the gradient of the road surface. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
