PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized optical encoder having low cost, a low supply voltage and high resolution. SOLUTION: An encoder head 10 is loaded with a light source 17, a light receiving element 12 for receiving light from the light source 17 through an encoder scale 11, and a signal processing circuit 13 for processing an electric signal from the light receiving element 12. This encoder is equipped with: a signal detection means 14 to be started selectively following setting, for detecting one or a plurality of approximately sine wave-shaped signals outputted from the encoder head 10 when being started; a signal determination means 15 to be started selectively following setting, for determining each waveform of one or the plurality of approximately sine wave-shaped signals detected by the signal detection means 14 when being started; and a switching means (a driving means 16 with applied current switching function) for switching a current to be applied to the light source 17 in a plurality of stages based on a determination result by the signal determination means 15.
