<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine which includes a cloth amount detection means which precisely detects a cloth amount by a simple constitution while suppressing influence of variance in the friction torque of a drum rotation shaft while the cloth amount in a drum is imbalanced. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The washing machine includes: a first detection step of accelerating the rotation of the drum and measuring an angular acceleration in acceleration α1 while the rotation speed increases from a predetermined rotation speed N1 to a predetermined rotation speed N2; and a second detection step of after the first detection step, performing control of keeping the rotation speed of the N2, thereafter generating a predetermined constant deceleration torque of a motor, and measuring an angular acceleration α2 in deceleration while the rotation speed decreases from a rotation speed N3 to a rotation speed N4 of the drum. When the acceleration of the water tank is detected by the acceleration detection part and is larger than a preset reference value, it is determined that abnormal vibration occurs, and the motor is stopped at the moment. When it is not determined that abnormal vibration occurs, the cloth amount is detected on the basis of the angular acceleration α1 in acceleration and the angular acceleration α2 in deceleration.
